CURE TREATMENT PREVENTION GENERAL

Stigma and self-stigma

Many people worry about what others think of them, and that also applies to people with HIV. Negative thoughts about your HIV can make you feel like you are an inferior person. This is called self-stigma. Self-stigma can prevent you from enjoying life to the full. For example, some people are afraid of rejection or choose to hide their HIV status from loved ones.

Are you bothered by negative thoughts about your HIV? The Hello Gorgeous Foundation organises RESET, a series of workshops to help you deal with stigma and self-stigma, and to change your outlook on life with HIV in a positive way.
How you deal with HIV is personal and there is no right or wrong way. But it can help to explore the extent to which you have accepted your HIV. People who have accepted their HIV generally feel better about themselves.

Almost everyone living with HIV has had troubled thoughts about what it means to have HIV. You cannot wish the virus away. And it may be years before a cure for HIV is found. The question is: what do you do in the meantime?
