In the early years, HIV and AIDS were a huge shock, both to society and to the people affected by it. Healthy young people became seriously ill and died within a short period of time. This led to fear, anger and despair. Even now, when HIV is discussed in the media, that fear can sometimes still be felt.
The way HIV is presented in the media is not always sympathetic. For many people living with HIV, this is something they have to learn to deal with. Talking to other people who have HIV can boost your confidence. Unfortunately, you may also encounter prejudice from people close to you. Although there is no ready-made solution, often knowledge, self-confidence and understanding can help you.
You may also encounter prejudice from health professionals or service providers. Naturally, you expect them to treat you with respect. If this is not the case, it can be particularly painful. You can report this to the Service Point of the HIV Vereniging.
