Reports from the research community vary, but researchers are hopeful that long-term suppression of HIV without medication should be possible.
A lot of research is being done into long-term suppression of HIV without medication. The focus here is mainly on people who started taking antiretrovirals very soon after their infection. The reason for this is that the HIV reservoir – the places where the virus hides – remains smaller when treatment is started early. A smaller reservoir makes it easier for the immune system to control the virus without medication.
Although there is no method that works for everyone yet, these studies offer promising insights for the future.
