CURE TREATMENT PREVENTION GENERAL

What does it mean:

PEP

PEP stands for: ‘Post-Exposure Prophylaxis’. If someone has accidentally run a high risk of HIV infection (for example, due to a torn condom), they can get a one-month course of the drugs used to treat HIV from a GGD clinic. This is called PEP. The PEP treatment must start within 72 hours of possible exposure to the virus. Not everyone who has had unprotected sex needs to take PEP. The treatment is only necessary if there is a high risk of infection.
