There are many different types of antiretroviral drugs. Each drug combats the virus in a different way.
In 1996, researchers discovered that HIV could be effectively suppressed by combining different drugs, so that people living with HIV no longer developed advanced HIV disease (AIDS) and could carry on with their lives. This combination of different types of antiretrovirals is called combination therapy.
