CURE TREATMENT PREVENTION GENERAL

How large is your HIV reservoir?

Researchers have discovered that some people have large HIV reservoirs and others have small ones. The size depends on how long you had HIV before you started taking anti-HIV medication. People who started taking antiretrovirals within a few months of infection seem to have a smaller HIV reservoir than people who started later.

The size of your HIV reservoir probably affects how easy or difficult it will be to wake up the dormant CD4 cells or put them into a deeper sleep. Simply because there are more or fewer of them.

There are also indications that some people who start taking HIV inhibitors very soon after infection are better able to suppress their HIV themselves, for longer periods of time and without medication.
