CURE TREATMENT PREVENTION GENERAL

Clinical research brings us closer and closer to a cure for HIV

Taking part in a clinical trial

A clinical trial is a research study in which a new drug, treatment or medical approach is tested, to make sure it is safe and effective for human beings. The objective is to find out whether a new treatment is better than an existing one.

HIV clinical research tests new drugs, vaccines or other ways to cure HIV. The people who take part are provided with sufficient information and support, and are asked for their informed consent. They can stop taking part whenever they want.

A clinical trial is important because it helps to find better treatment – improving care for everyone.

On this page, we explain a number of terms and procedures that are usually part of a clinical trial. That will help you to understand what is meant exactly, as well as what you can expect if you do participate.

4-phase research

If scientists and doctors test new drugs or medical techniques on human beings, that is called clinical research. This is carried out in four phases.

Leukapheresis

Leukapheresis is a commonly used method for collecting white blood cells. Read more about how that works.

Looking for HIV reservoirs

There are different ways of looking for the places where HIV hides in the body.

Consent and privacy

All research studies must comply with the rules for protecting the privacy of participants.

Taking part in a clinical trial

In the Netherlands, research into an HIV cure is conducted at four large teaching hospitals:
  • Radboudumc in Nijmegen
  • Erasmus MC in Rotterdam
  • UMC Utrecht
  • Amsterdam UMC
These hospitals conduct biomedical research and clinical trials.

Do you want to take part in a research study? Then please contact the appropriate hospital department. The contact details are given below. You can also click on the link and go straight to the department’s website page.
